Original logo for Xtra magazine

Xtra logo

Around 1984/85, Canada’s leading national gay magazine, The Body Politic, decided to launch a new, local Toronto publication. I was member of the board at the time. Little did we know then that The Body Politic would die within the next couple of years, and Xtra would become a little publishing empire of its own, with sibling publications in Vancouver and Ottawa, a thriving audiotext business, and websites.

I was head of the committee that coordinated the launch of Xtra (as a single, folded broadsheet at the time), came up with its name and created its original logo. The paper has grown immensely since those days, and the logo has mutated, although it amazingly still retains my original, hand-drawn X.
