Original logo for Xtra magazine

Xtra logo

Around 1984/85, Canada’s leading national gay magazine, The Body Politic, decided to launch a new, local Toronto publication. I was member of the board at the time. Little did we know then that The Body Politic would die within the next couple of years, and Xtra would become a little publishing empire of its own, with sibling publications in Vancouver and Ottawa, a thriving audiotext business, and websites.

I was head of the committee that coordinated the launch of Xtra (as a single, folded broadsheet at the time), came up with its name and created its original logo. Although the paper changed immensely over the years, this iconic, hand-drawn “X” remained its symbol until the spring of 2010.
