Cover of Canada at War

CANADA AT WAR

from the archives of Maclean’s magazine
published by Penguin Books Canada

Canada at War is a collection of war reporting from Maclean's, a Canadian weekly news magazine (thus no particular author).

The cover image is The Hitler Line, a World War II war painting by Charles F. Comfort, which was selected by the client.

I went with a 1940s flavour for the cover, partly for obvious reasons and partly because I find much of the poster work from the 30s and 40s to be very attractive and have wanted to play with that feel for a long time, though the echo here is mainly typographic.

What’s that typeface? Metro #2, by William Dwiggins. Beautiful, isn’t it?
